Contraindications
Hypersensitivity to ascorbic acid.
Warnings and Precautions
Cevitil should be given with caution to patients with hyperoxaluria or renal insufficiency.
In diabetic patients, Cevitil should be discontinued for several days before determination of the glucose content in urine.
Excessive doses of Cevitil should be avoided in:
Diabetic patients.
Patients on sodium-restricted diet or anticoagulant therapy.
Patients undergoing tests for occult blood in stools.
Patients with G6PD deficiency, because large doses of ascorbic acid leads to hemolysis.
Smokers appear to have increased requirements of ascorbic acid because the vitamin is oxidized and excreted more rapidly than in non smokers. So smokers having ascorbic acid deficiency should decrease or stop smoking.
Drug Interactions
Salicylates: Salicylates inhibit ascorbic acid uptake by leukocytes and platelets.
Warfarin: Ascorbic acid may inhibit it’s anticoagulant effect.
Disulfiram: Large doses of ascorbic acid may diminish the effect of disulfiram.
Iron: Ascorbic acid increases iron absorption in the gastrointestinal tract.
Pregnancy and Lactation
Cevitil is not recommended during pregnancy, unless it is clearly needed, and it should be used with caution during lactation.
Undesirable Effects
Cevitil is usually well-tolerated.
Large doses may cause nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea, heartburn, abdominal cramps, dizziness, and hemolysis in patients with glucose–6-phosphate dehydrogenase deficiency.
Pharmacological Properties
Cevitil is a water-soluble vitamin, with antioxidant properties. It is essential for the synthesis of collagen and intercellular materials.
Cevitil is also needed for healing process, and enhancing body resistance to infections.
Pharmacokinetics:
Ascorbic acid is readily absorbed from the gastrointestinal tract and is widely distributed in the body tissues, and crosses the placenta and appears in breast milk.
Ascorbic acid is reversibly oxidized in the liver to dehydroascorbic acid, which is biologically active, some is metabolized to ascorbate-2-sulfate, which is inactive, and oxalic acid which are excreted in the urine. Ascorbic acid in excess of the body’s needs is also rapidly eliminated unchanged in the urine.
Storage
Store at a temperature not exceeding 25ºC.
